The Finale (part 21)

Ξ March 11th, 2008 | → 11 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

A week of tormenting my roommate for information got me nowhere. She didn’t crack, and though I suspected a proposal was coming from Isaac, I couldn’t get any confirmation from her.

A week after I first started really considering breaking things off with Isaac, he came up from San Diego for the weekend. Friday passed and no proposal.

Saturday morning he called and woke me up to go out to breakfast. We got coffee and bagels.

We went shopping.

He fixed some computer stuff for me, and did a few other errands.

I think we may have seen a matinee.

We went to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants. It was a beautiful night and we sat outside on the patio.

The whole day passed, and no proposal. I was starting to think it was never going to happen and we really were going to break up.

Isaac suggested taking a walk to the park down the street. I changed into jeans and a sweatshirt, and he told me I looked even better in them than in my nice skirt.

Which was a bit of a giveaway.

So we went to the part and strolled around the lake, and then stopped and said, “Well, Christy…”

And then he paused.

And then he spit out his gum.

And I thought, “Oh no. If he’s going to propose to me it is NOT going to be right after he spits.”

So I said, “Why don’t we go sit on that bench?” Not noticing that it was in the mud.

So we sat down. And then he kneeled down.

In the mud.

And he proposed. Five years after we first met. Three years after we first started dating.

We were married 9 months later. Just three days after I finished my Master’s Degree.

And almost two years ago, he casually said, “I started a blog.” So I looked at it, and this is what I saw-

Isaac's blog

I am so thankful for him.

This is the final entry in a series. You can read the rest of the series here.

My Mom

Ξ February 20th, 2007 | → 3 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

My mom just left after visiting us for several days (which explains my absence from blogdom).
She just left a few hours ago, and ya’ll, I miss her already!

Now, to some of you, this is probably normal. But not to me.

I love my parents, but I was always pretty independent and I never missed them when we were apart. I actually left home and went to college when I was 16, and even then I didn’t miss my parents.

But the older I get, the more I miss my mom. Every time I see her, she seems just a little bit older. There’s more gray in her hair, and she doesn’t move as easily as she used to. She has developed arthritis and fibromyalgia in recent years, and I guess it has made me realize that she won’t always be here to buy way too many presents and cook too much food.

I think one big downside of the military life is that we don’t get to live near my parents, and my children only see their much beloved grandparents every few months. But my mom is the first to encourage us to stay in the military, and has never once complained or been manipulative about the little time we do get to see her (unlike other relatives).

So I miss her already, and my heart aches when I watch her with my kids, knowing that some day she’ll be gone, and I’m surprised by how much that thought hurts.
