A typical homeschool day…now

With Chloe entering 1st grade and the state legally requiring me to school her, this year has been quite a bit different. It was a struggle at first until I began working out with a friend in the neighborhood. M/W/F we meet at my house, and T/Th at her house…at 5:30am. I don’t think I could get out of bed if I didn’t have a friend waiting on me, but it has been so great for our daily schedule to get up early!

4:55am- Wake up. Try to come up with an excuse to cancel workout. Give up and dress in workout clothes, drink a cup of coffee, check email quickly.
5:30-6:30- Work out!
6:30-7:45- Eat breakfast, toss a load of laundry in, Bible devotions/prayer, do some Beachbody business online or check email or Facebook
7:45-8:30- Kids wake up and eat breakfast, dry the laundry, sometimes even fold it and put it away
8:30-9- Kids get dressed and do morning chores. Sometimes they stretch this out all the way to 10 or 10:30 if their rooms are messy. I can take a shower most days.
9-10 or so Chloe gets started on school by herself. The day before, I put post its on the pages she is supposed to do in any workbooks, and I leave a note if I want her to draw a picture or write a story. I spend 15-30 minutes or so doing some preschool activities with Luke and Audrey, then they usually play and don’t interrupt quite as much as they used to. I can do a few household chores or post on the Beachbody message boards.
10-10:30- Snack
10:30-11/12- Depending on the day, read history with Chloe, let her read aloud to me or do math together if it’s a day that she needs me. Most days we’re done with school before lunch!
12- Lunch- it takes a little longer now since my husband is usually home for lunch
1-3- (not so) Quiet time for kids. There aren’t too many naps any more. I do some housework, scrapbooking, Beachbody business or sometimes a second workout. Some days I’ll take a shower if I didn’t have time in the morning.
3-5- Play with the kids outside (we don’t have a fenced yard here), housework, scrapbooking, errands, park visit.
5-7- Dinner prep/eating/clean up
7-8- Kids showers and clean up
8:15- Kids go to bed
8:15-11 or 12 or 1- tv/scrapbooking/Beachbody business/reading/proofreading my husband’s school work or helping him out in some way.

Next year it will be legally required for me to teach Luke also! And it looks like we’re going to be moving to Virginia, where the homeschool laws are quite a bit stricter than here in Louisiana, but hopefully I’ll get blogging back into the schedule a little more regularly!

A typical homeschool day…6 months ago

Our typical day has changed so much this year that I wanted to write down what our days USED TO be like before I forget!

Before this year we had no legal requirement to do any school. Chloe was in kindergarten and Luke wasn’t ready to sit and do any preschool activities. Often the kids would wake up and start playing and they’d get along so well that we wouldn’t even do any school! When we did, the day went like this:

7:00am- Stumble groggily out of bed while three kids jump up and down excitedly telling me they are hungry.
7:05-8am- Feed us all and drink copious amounts of caffeine.
8-9am- Kids get dressed and do morning chores. I drink more coffee and check email and blog. Maybe do a few household chores and get dressed in workout clothes.
9-10:30am- Read history with Chloe, help her with math, handwriting and phonics. Get interrupted many times by Luke and Audrey asking if Chloe can come play with them or they can watch tv. Finally give up on school when the interruptions get to be too much.
10:30am- Give the kids a snack and let them play.
12:00- Lunch
1-3- Nap and (not so) Quiet time for kids. My workout and time for Bible devotions/prayer. Some days even a shower!
3-5- Errands, house cleaning, playing outside with the kids, blogging (wow, I had so much blogging time back then!) reading with the kids, etc.
5-7- Dinner prep/eating/clean up
8- kids to bed, my time for tv, scrapbooking, blogging, reading…
Sometime between 11pm and 1am I went to bed.

Tomorrow I’ll post our current schedule. The day starts much earlier, ends at the same time and yet somehow there’s no blogging on the list anywhere!
