Meeting God in Diapers and Dishes

Ξ June 9th, 2008 | → 10 Comments | ∇ Everyday Stuff |

I’ve been realizing lately that I’m caught up in getting through the day and getting things done, and not really thinking about God much.

Oh, I squeeze a quiet time in, and we host a small group at our house, and I say prayers with my kids before bed and do devotions with them when we remember.

And answer questions about whether God has a beard and if He has the biggest arms of anyone and if He is a giant.

It’s not that I forget about God, it’s more that my view of Him seems to have changed.

When I was younger and working in ministry full time, He provided my salary.  When I was overseas He calmed typhoons and worked miracles.

But as my world seems to have shrunk to my family and house, my perception of God seems to have shrunk, too.  In my head I know He is the same God who saved me from a war, yet my heart can’t seem to make that connection anymore.

What do you all do to connect with a big God when you’re so wrapped up in all your little concerns?

There are a lot of little ways…

I DO try to have my devotional time daily…but that doesn’t always happen.

I use my morning walks as prayer time.

When I start feeling insignificant or unloved, I go back and review the things God has done in my life.

I read a good missionary book/letter/article/blog, to regain som prespective.

Realize He reveals Himself in the small ways too. Through our children, through the mundane daily tasks. Sometimes it’s hard to see, but He is there in the small things too…our Big God is there no matter what and realizing that and thanking Him for being the God who calms storms, but also calms our hearts.

    That helps me anyway. :)

When you find out, let me know. I’m deep into everyone’s sick and tired and wishing everyone was well and not tired.

Oh my, i could have written this post. I have been thinking A LOT on this… It’s been 6 years since i left my ministry position to be a full time, work from home, mom… I seem to have dwindled in this area gradually…

For me, lately I’ve been becoming more awake to the worlds great needs, and trying to do something about them. Becoming engaged with the Big Wide World has helped me remember the bigness of our God, and our great need for Him. He is truly amazing and I’m glad to be out of my little Mummy-bubble. (Not to say that raising our little shining stars to go out into this messed up generation isn’t alone the most important job in the world though!)

driving… I definitely find my one on one time with the Big Man during my driving time. I’m not sure why, it used to be the radio I was more worried about, but lately I find that I do a lot of ‘talking’ and praying during this time. It may have a lot to with my fears of a wreck, but it seem like my only time to not have to think about much else, aside from the road of course!

Thanks for asking this, it’s a great reminder to make time no matter what… I may have to blog on this later… Have a blessed day!

Great post… it’s something I wonder about a lot too! I would say that God and I meet during mundane chores, whether it be dishes or diapers… not so much the sitting down & meditating kind, but often in singing with my boys or pointing out the beauty of creation or explaining what makes the thunder (we’ve been having lots of storms!) Nothing is as cut and dried now that I’m a mother but in some ways I feel closer to God?!?! One pastor pointed out the verse that says, “He shall gently lead those with young” and I think it’s true that raising these little kids is a great mission & he’s not gonna expect the same amount of time & energy as he would’ve when we were *younger* and childless.

It’s hard to find time when I’m cleaning up spilled chocolate milk and stepping on toys that were supposed to be cleaned up off the floor =) I have a moment every night after the kids are asleep. Something about watching them sleeping all snuggled in bed warms my heart and makes me appreciate Him even more. It reminds me of His love for each and every one of us and how He must feel as he looks down on us.
